Green Day: Challenging Conventionalism

Hello everyone,     Green Day does not need an introduction. Punk, rebellion, and angst are all words you can use to describe them and their songs. Often their lyrics are challenging conventional beliefs and ideologies. It's their whole identity nowadays. They bring this type of energy in their live performances as well. Green Day changes their lyrics to even match current political issues as well. Everyone knows the album and song American Idiot. It embodies the core experience of living as an American teenager.  Likewise a lot of other songs are very similar and will often leave you pumped. I'd recommend the following: American Idiot (duh) Stray Heart Stuart and the Ave. Green Day's most popular songs show up in everyday retail and food spaces, but why not also in your playlist? Be sure to follow along and maybe your playlist will be improved with other rock and alternative songs!

Radiohead: Meaning Behind the Music

Hello everyone,     Today I'm going to talk about popular British band: Radiohead. Their songs are deeply rooted in humanity and the abstract. Often they sing about intimacy, existential dread, and loneliness. Radiohead songs are define the grunge and alt. rock genre. The lyrics are meaningful and the instrumentals are often hypnotic and eerie. They were experimental and often pushed the boundary of "alt. rock", implementing electronic and ambient noises to their song. I personally grew fond of Radiohead after I had finished julie's discography. Radiohead music had the same vibe and really filled the same niche. My personal favorites include: Jigsaw Falling Into Place Creep All I Need I recommend taking a listen to Radiohead even if you're not a big fan of grunge or alt. rock. Some of their songs can be considered 'co-worker music'. Be sure to follow along for more alt. rock bands!

Sambomaster: Beyond the Music

Hello everyone,     You may have heard of Sambomaster vaguely in the past. This is because Sambomaster is an alt. rock band that has created songs for the hit anime "Naruto". They have a very passionate and rural vibe to their music and are very popular in Japan and even in parts of the West. Sambomaster has a more upbeat and pure-punk energy discography, often talking about chasing dreams, heartbreak, and self-discovery. The most noticeable part of their music is the instrumentals. Often beaming energy with their guitar riffs and drumming. Likewise, this compliments the iconic raspy vocals of lead singer Okamoto. I've listen to Sambomaster longer than I've even realized. The first Sambomaster song I listened to was back in 2017 being "Seishun Kyousoukyoku". I've always enjoy their songs and would often recommend them to other people who enjoy Japanese alt. rock If I had to recommend three songs: Seishun Kyōsōkyoku Dekikkonai Wo Yaranakucha Sekaiwo Sore...

The Smiths: British Alt. Rock

Hello everyone,     The Smiths is a British alt. rock band that has been rightfully added to my playlist lately. They make songs reminiscent of the early 80s and 90s and have amazing vocals to back their songs. If you've had a long day at work or school, I'd say they are one of the best bands to wind down to. In all fairness, a lot of The Smith's discography can start to sound similar. If you don't enjoy their particular sound, then I can't really recommend any of their other songs. This is not just a problem with The Smiths, but a lot of music artists (I'm looking at you Dragonforce).    Their lyrics are often about romantics, defiance, and more typical punk/alt. rock themes. The Smiths' influence extends to newer bands too such as Radiohead. If I HAD to pick three songs from their discography, I'd recommend: There is a Light That Never Goes Out (this is by far their most popular song and for a good reason) Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now The Charm...

Nirvana: An All-time Classic

Hello everyone,     Do I need to even introduce Nirvana? A well-acclaimed band from Washington, and the infamous makers of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Their songs are heavy, messy (in a good way), and rock of angst and passion. Their songs are great for teenagers in existential dread, American hard-rock enthusiasts, and people like me who listen to experimental and niche songs. If you try to picture a "punk" in your head, there's like a 70% chance they'll be wearing a Nirvana t-shirt. This is indicative of how deeply planted Nirvana is in rock and punk culture. Their songs are the classic "teen" and "American" sounding rock songs we've grown to love. So without further ado, it's time for my favorite songs!: Smells Like Teen Spirit (you cant go wrong with this) Aneurysm Drain You  (a sleeper option from the same album as Teen Spirit) If you somehow haven't listen to any songs from Nirvana, I could at least recommend trying to l...

Hitorie: A Leader to Never Be Forgotten

Hello everyone,     Hitorie is a Japanese alt. rock band that is known for the songs "Unknown Mother Goose" and "One Me Two Hearts". They are a popular Japanese rock band with members that have worked with other popular artist such as Ado, LiSA, and ichigo. Unfortunately, their lead member and singer wowaka died of acute heart failure in 2019. wowaka was a key identity to the band and the passing affect many fans and the members greatly. What I like about Hitorie is their fast-paced, sporadic pace. Their band does not play it safe, and goes for more avant-garde ideas. Each song has a lot of passion behind it and it is truly unique compared to other alt. rock bands, even Japanese ones. My favorite songs include: Utsutsu One Me Two Hearts SLEEPWALK I'd recommend Hitorie if you like Japanese rock and a fast-paced playlist. It is definitely niche and less-mainstream, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea. I won't judge, but I will judge you if you don...

Sunny Day Service: All but Sunny

Hello everyone, Sunny Day Service is a Japanese alt. rock band that I enjoy listening to on the daily. They have a more somber, less-grungy tone than other alternative bands which makes them unique.  Despite their name however, many of their lyrics talk about loneliness, lost love, and other gloomy subjects. Likewise the tone of the songs is a lot less upbeat and more calm and soothing. I started listening to Sunny Day Service to fulfill my "the pillows" itch. The pillows disbanded recently and I've already listened to their entire discography. So naturally, I looked elsewhere to find similar gems and Sunny Day Service eventually popped onto my radar. Some of their songs are hit or miss, but when they hit they are great. Personally I enjoy these songs from Sunny Day Service: Setsuna Ichigobatake de tsukamaete Convini no Coffee  (this one is very somber) I would definitely give them a shot if you enjoy the pillows and other Japanese rock bands! Be sure to follow along if y...
