The Smiths: British Alt. Rock

 Hello everyone,

    The Smiths is a British alt. rock band that has been rightfully added to my playlist lately. They make songs reminiscent of the early 80s and 90s and have amazing vocals to back their songs. If you've had a long day at work or school, I'd say they are one of the best bands to wind down to.

In all fairness, a lot of The Smith's discography can start to sound similar. If you don't enjoy their particular sound, then I can't really recommend any of their other songs. This is not just a problem with The Smiths, but a lot of music artists (I'm looking at you Dragonforce).   

Their lyrics are often about romantics, defiance, and more typical punk/alt. rock themes. The Smiths' influence extends to newer bands too such as Radiohead.

If I HAD to pick three songs from their discography, I'd recommend:

There is a Light That Never Goes Out (this is by far their most popular song and for a good reason)

Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now

The Charming Man

If you like an older and more soothing sound to your playlist, I'd most definitely recommend adding some The Smiths songs. Be sure to follow along to listen to more alt. rock yap!

The Pillows: An Early 2000s Vibe

 Hello Everyone, I'm James Tran, a student at USC Columbia whose had an unhealthy obsession with alternative rock over the last few years. Today, I'll be starting my weekly blog with my favorite alternative band: The Pillows.  The Pillows is an alt rock band from Hokkaido, Japan that is infamous for their work on the show FLCL and their distinct early 2000s sound. They are a regular on my playlist, and even at points the only band I'll listen to throughout the day. There is a "carefree" and "punk" vibe to almost every song they put out. Although their lyrics may not make a lot of sense, it's great music to turn your brain off and listen to. Radiohead: Meaning Behind the Music

 Hello everyone,     Today I'm going to talk about popular British band: Radiohead. Their songs are deeply rooted in humanity and the abstract. Often they sing about intimacy, existential dread, and loneliness. Radiohead songs are define the grunge and alt. rock genre. The lyrics are meaningful and the instrumentals are often hypnotic and eerie. They were experimental and often pushed the boundary of "alt. rock", implementing electronic and ambient noises to their song. I personally grew fond of Radiohead after I had finished julie's discography. Radiohead music had the same vibe and really filled the same niche. My personal favorites include: Jigsaw Falling Into Place Creep All I Need I recommend taking a listen to Radiohead even if you're not a big fan of grunge or alt. rock.
